University of Memphis BCM
Hiro came to the University of Memphis from a suburb of Tokyo, Japan. He can specifically to study English for one semester in the University’s Intensive English for Internationals (IEI) program. As a result of relationships with Uof M BCM students who intentionally connect with internationals for the purpose of sharing their faith and loving these students, Hiro met and became friends with Kristina Philips. Kristina, a family group leader at the BCM, took Hiro and other international students under her wing and began inviting him to the BCM and to her local church. He participated in many activities and became interested in learning more about Jesus. As a Buddhist, he had not been exposed to Christianity or the claims of Christ, but Kristina was faithful to share the Gospel. One Sunday after church while eating lunch at the Cracker Barrel, Kristina was able to help Hiro as he surrendered his life to Christ along with another student from Taiwan. Several BCM students helped in discipling Hiro during the few weeks he had before returning to Japan, and then on the last Sunday before leaving Memphis, Kristina and Jeff Jones, the BCM Campus Minister had the privilege to baptize Hiro as a new brother in Christ. Since returning home, Hiro has been connected with an International Mission Board Missionary and church plant in his city and is growing in his faith as well as sharing with others.
